Red Bull X-Alps 2013

I spent a few days at the Red Bull X-Alps in July, the biggest adventure race in paragliding. I was reporting for Cross Country magazine and also reporting for the Red Bull X-Alps news site.

The design of the race is simple: 30 pilot-athletes race from Salzburg to Monaco using only their feet and their paraglider. Chrigel Maurer completed the 1,050km straight-line course in almost exactly one week – incredible!

My job was easy. I just had to hang out at various spots and grab interviews and photos of athletes as they went past. This was a bit like hunting for deer. The Alps are big and these guys are very fleet of foot. They move fast, don't slow down and leave you for dust. One of them even left me trailing as he slid down the bannisters in front of me. Anything to save a few seconds.

I left the party as it headed into Switzerland. A great week.
